Empowering Lives Together

Intellectually Impaired Adults require protected employment and especially in today’s economic climate, there are very few opportunities available. The Careways Workshops provide and environment where these individuals can feel proud of who they are and what they can achieve. In our clamorous society where groups and individuals representing almost every cause shout out their demands and rights, there is a group so marginalized and isolated, their voices are rarely, if ever, heard. Poorly represented, largely unknown, few in numbers, it is a powerless, truly disadvantaged, and largely forgotten set.

In South Africa, they are referred to as Intellectually Handicapped or Mentally Disabled. The British have a less stigmatized term – People with a Learning Disability – and in that country and other Western nations, members of the group are accorded respect, assistance, protection, choices and opportunities the likes of which their peers in South Africa could never even dream of. Moreover, for their parents, two perpetual questions hover like a doubled- edged sword: How can I give my child a richer, more stimulating life? What is going to happen to him/her when I am dead?

To both questions, there are no easy or comforting answers. Those who do campaign on behalf of the mentally disabled in South Africa usually find themselves up against more popular or glamorous causes. And yet this is a group that asks for so little – for instance to be recognized and respected, included, given reachable goals that make a person feel able and not found wanting, to be given choices. Nestled in the hills of KwaZulu Natal, lies Kloof and KwaNdengezi, two areas in which Careways run day workshops for adults with intellectual disabilities. The Kloof workshop opens 5 days a week, and the Siyanakekela Centre in KwaNdengezi, twice a week, until full funding is available. The need in that community is great.

The Careways centers offer a supportive environment where individuals can embrace their identities and celebrate their capabilities. Our program includes continuous training in essential life skills, education, and socialization. Our members thoroughly enjoy social interactions, often coming together to dance when their favorite songs play. We strive to foster self-esteem and help each individual find his or her place within the community.

Care Homes

Our primary objective is to secure funding to establish a care home for these adults—a true home away from home—where they can learn to live independently while enjoying a safe and supportive environment

Family Support

Support for families of individuals with disabilities is often limited, which is why we strive to provide comprehensive assistance. We focus on education, nutrition, exercise, and emotional well-being, all within an environment deeply rooted in Christian faith and values. Our goal is to create a nurturing space where families can find the support they need

Support Us

Our primary goal is to secure funding for a residential care home where our Members can live, receive care, and be surrounded by their peers in a supportive and nurturing environment. Join us in creating a brighter future for them. You can make a world of difference for our members and their caregivers by providing vital materials. Simple items like educational and craft materials, puzzles, books, and board games enrich their days at our workshops, while support for transport ensures they can get here. Your gift helps our members create beautiful crafts for our annual market day, where they proudly highlight their hard work. Your contribution, no matter the size, helps directly improve the lives of our members. With a donation today, you can help us provide the resources needed for transport, educational materials, and enriching craft projects. We are enormously grateful for your generosity, and as a registered Public Benefit Organisation, we can issue a Section 18A tax certificate for your contribution. Every contribution ensures that a vulnerable person feels respected and empowered. That is the real impact of your generosity. ”Careways is a wonderful place for those with intellectual disabilities and people with Down Syndrome. My daughter who is Down Syndrome has learned so much. I didn't think she would do what she does now, if it was not for Careways and their wonderful teachers and volunteers. So for me personally I know my daughter is safe, happy and learning different skills. She is not so shy and talks more and that to me is a big plus.”
